Michigan License Suspension and Multiple OWIs

Is holding a driver’s license a privilege or a right? While many would argue that it should be a right, the fact of the matter is that it is a privilege. This fact is significant because authorities can’t take away your rights, but they can take away your privileges: like your driver’s license.

Although drivers’ licenses are privileges, many people need them to survive. In fact, some people wouldn’t be able to do the jobs they currently have if it weren’t for their drivers’ licenses. In other words, some people rely on their licenses to make their livelihoods.

Unfortunately, multiple operating while intoxicated (OWI) convictions can impact livelihoods.

In Michigan, a first-time OWI conviction will result in a mandatory six-month driver’s license suspension. That’s six months of relying on ridesharing companies and family members to get from point A to point B (unless the driver obtains a restricted license after 30 days).

However, multiple OWI convictions result in worse penalties.

Multiple OWIs & Driver’s License

If someone is convicted for multiple OWIs, they will likely face extreme penalties that impact their driver’s license. If someone is convicted of two OWIs within seven years of each other, he or she will lose their license for a minimum of one year.

Additionally, someone who is convicted of two OWIs within seven years is not eligible for a restricted license, which means they will assuredly rely on others to get around.

If someone is convicted of a second-time OWI and his license had been revoked in the last seven years, his license will be revoked for a minimum of 5 years!
