Attorney White Named as One of Law360’s 2022 Titans Of the Plaintiffs Bar

Attorney H. James White was recently named one of Law360’s 2022 Titans Of the Plaintiffs Bar. The publication wrote a thorough and thoughtful profile piece, recognizing Mr. White’s notable achievements.TITAN of the Plaintiffs Bar

The article discusses Mr. White’s early interest in practicing law, a passion that arose after witnessing his father get beaten almost to death by men with bats.

Although Mr. White’s legal practice started small – Mr. White told Law360 that it was initially him representing clients from his attic – he eventually landed a drug case that got business booming. And as one of the only African American lawyers practicing in the area, he started getting a heftier caseload.

Law360’s profile on Mr. White goes on to talk about how his legal focus shifted. Early in his career, Mr. White defended men accused of sexual assault. But he had handled a case where, although his client was acquitted, he didn’t feel right about the outcome.

Eventually, Mr. White started representing victims of sexual abuse instead of alleged perpetrators. Because of his experience defending the accused, he was well aware of the tactics defense lawyers used to try to cast doubt in the minds of the jury. He used this insight to build strong legal strategies for sexual assault survivors.

The Law360 article highlights Mr. White’s most significant sexual assault cases. Mr. White represented some of the women a Michigan State University doctor had sexually abused. Because of Michigan’s statute of limitations on sexual assault at the time, Mr. White came up against several challenges when trying to seek justice for these women. He recognized that the law needed to change to hold the perpetrators and enablers accountable.

Mr. White was instrumental in furthering legislation increasing the statutes of limitations for victims of childhood sexual assault, giving them until their 28th birthday to bring claims. He also proposed a bill that would strip Michigan State of its governmental immunity, prompting the university to quadruple its gymnastics claims settlement.

Mr. White and his firm have also taken on cases of men sexually abused by members of the Catholic Clergy and leadership with the Boy Scouts of America.

An advocate for seeking justice for victims of sexual assault, Mr. White continues to propose changes to the law and policies, allowing men and women more time to step forward.
